Thanks to generous support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and from HOPOS, a number of travel grants will be available for graduate students, retirees, recent PhDs, and independent scholars who are speaking in HOPOS 2024. Information on how to apply will be sent directly to conference speakers. Members of underrepresented groups in philosophy are highly encouraged to apply.
Eligibility and Requirements
- To be eligible to apply for a travel grant, a person must be a graduate student, recent PhD, or independent/retired scholar who has had a contributed paper, symposium paper, or poster accepted for the congress program (For HOPOS 2024, "recent PhDs" are those who earned their PhDs on or after 15 July 2019.) In addition, funds from this grant may not be used to provide travel or related expenses to individuals whose comparable expenses are being defrayed by their employer or by some third party, including through another Federal grant or another academic society.
- Travel grants can be used to cover congress registration fees as well as travel to and from the congress venue. (For those traveling by air, this includes ground transportation to and from the airport.) The grants cannot be used to cover hotel expenses, travel during the meeting, or HOPOS membership dues.
- The maximum award amounts are $750 for domestic travel and $1000 for international travel. (Specific award amounts may be less than these maximums and will depend on the number of applicants and the total funding requested.)
- Travel grants will be issued as a reimbursement after the meeting, and grantees will be required to complete a reimbursement form and provide receipts for all expenses within roughly 14 days of the end date of the conference. (The specific deadline for submitting the reimbursement form and receipts will be sent to participants later.)
- Expenses can be reimbursed only if the applicant's receipts include the applicant's name, airline/vendor, and proof of purchase. Payment in miles, points, or eCredits is not eligible for reimbursement,
- Applicants who are U.S. citizens or are working for a U.S.-based institution can have their airfare reimbursed only if the flight is booked either on a US-flag airline or purchased through a U.S. airline's designator and flight number if the flight is shared between a U.S. and a foreign airline. In other words, if a flight is operated by a non-USA-based carrier, it must purchased from a U.S. carrier so it is listed as a flight under a number designated by Alaska Airlines [AS], American Airlines [AA], Delta Airlines [DL], Frontier Airlines [F9], Hawaiian Airlines [HA], Southwest Airlines [WN], Spirit Airlines [NK], or United Airlines [UA]. - Graduate student applicants will be required to provide proof of student status.
- All amounts listed on travel grant paperwork must be in United States Dollars (USD). Foreign currencies should be exchanged according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) conversion rate on the day of purchase. (Use of the Oanda online currency converter is also permitted.)
Procedure
- When you submit the Attendance Confirmation form, you'll be asked to indicate whether you are intend to apply for travel funds. After all responces have been collected (by March 1 2024), eligible members who have expressed interest will receive an email with further instructions on how to apply.
